11-05-11: Speaking of kayak trips, some great options for kayak trips are available locally with single day trips offered by Susan and Andrew and some great multi-day trips offered by Continental Drift Expeditions
Continental Drift offers customizable multi-day trips to a number of great local destinations including the Golfo Dulce and the Osa Peninsula. Check them out!
9-26-2011: Oceano is now closed for the off-season until early December. This is the time of year when we get the heaviest rains and few visitors to the country. For wildlife viewing however, there are areas that are accessible now by kayak that can't be reached during the dry season if one is stoic enough to endure the rains.
9-26-2011: In his never ending quest to research adventures for our guests, Kevin did a three day kayak trip on the Sierpe River in July. You can see photos of the trip on our Facebook page
2/24/2011: Kevin, his brothers Tony and Pat, and his son-in law Devin went on a three day three night sailboat trip with Haiku Sailing Charters to Isla del Cano. It was a wonderful trip and we highly recommend Capt Craig and crew to anyone looking to combine some adventure with some laid back time on the beach in Playa Zancudo. We fished, slept on deck under the stars (optional), learned about sailing, kayaked and hiked around the island. Check out a Youtube clip we made from our photos/video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJvq6_fb3TA
2/24/2011: I added a group of photos to the galleries, in the Memorable Sunsets gallery (Ok so the coconut budding isn't at sunset, it slipped in there). I added another group to the Good Times gallery. These were from a party that we had with music and dancing. A good time was had by all. Ritchie and his group are now playing every week or two at El Coquitos, the club just down the road from us. His music is uplifting and high energy.
01/13/2011: It has been a busy month at Oceano. Christmas and New Years is traditionally chaotic and this year was no exception. The weather is warmer and drier now and the road has been repaired from the normal problems caused by the rainy season. Water taxis are still the most comfortable and scenic route though:) We have a new guy from England named Paul helping out and he took some photos which I posted on our Facebook page for Oceano. Kevin is heading home to Playa Zancudo in a week and will be home for three weeks. We are having a mini family reunion plus a couple of friends from his Antarctic days will be visiting. A sailing trip is planned with Haiku Sailing Charters and we are looking forward to that! There are many options for exciting adventures in our area.
11/12/2010: Oceano opens for the season tonight! The Oceano will be opening today with some free made from scratch pizza. All are welcome:) The regulars are starting to trickle in to Playa Zancudo and the businesses are mostly open now. El Coquito opened last night and there is a dance there on Saturday night. The weather is drying out and getting warmer, the beach is still beautiful and the roads are being repaired. Costa Rica had a lot of road damage from a recent storm but it is being repaired as we speak. It's easier to get to Playa Zancudo now with the new bridge replacing the old river ferry but flying down on Sansa or Natureair is still much easier...
11/02/2010: I am back in paradise after two months in the desert. It's a pleasure to drink in all this wondrous moisture. I did expect some rain upon my return, but was not prepared for the lake that covered the road about a kilometer from Oceano. The dawn had just broken as we drove into town and stopped. Funny, I did not remember a lake there and if the two birds who were wading through it are storks, then I knew it must be pretty deep. But true to Tico style, our driver found another way and I soon found myself home again at Oceano. Busy getting ready for a new season and the wonderful opportunity to entertain all of our special guests Enjoying the return of Zancudo's many seasonal inhabitants...hi, hola, great to see you again. Their obvious joy at being once again here in paradise reminds me why we call this home...Elena
10/24/2010: New content! I added a new Youtube video and embedded the videos on our front page for easy access.
10/23/2010: Elena is packing her bags and getting ready to fly south to get Oceano up and running for the season. She will be back in Costa Rica on Tuesday! Edward, are those projects finished yet? :) We spend a lot of time cleaning and painting and doing all of the little things needed to make Oceano shine during the off-season. We added a new section to the site called "About Us". It is accessible from the home page and has a brief description of our backgrounds with photos...
10/19/2010: I added a photo gallery of images from our local wildlife sanctuary to our Facebook page. This is a fun day trip to a special place only accessible by boat, where injured animals are rehabilitated and released back into the wild when possible. Just click on the link "On Facebook" in the top right hand corner of our home page. There are lots of photos there. There is also a new Youtube slide-show of a day trip we organized on a beautiful Trimaran Yacht on the Golfo Dulce. You can see that by following the Youtube link on our front page. Enjoy:) I also added new photos to the Jungle adventures photo gallery, including some I took during a trip to the Osa Peninsula. The Osa is just a pleasant boat ride away across the beautiful Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf). Playa Zancudo can easily be combined with an adventure into the wilds of the Osa Peninsula as a place to unwind before or after an Osa trip.
10/05/2010: I just posted a slide-show of images from Playa Zancudo, the Golfo Dulce and Pavones on Youtube. Enjoy! I also added a photo gallery with some images from my seasons in Antarctica. I spent one summer and two winters at South Pole and one winter at Palmer Station. I had to come to Costa Rica to warm up:) Fellow Polies, I took most of the photos but a few of them (aurora and sun dog) were from the common drive at Pole. Let me know if they are yours and I will credit you properly...

10/01/2010: It is October 1st and Playa Zancudo is very quiet. It is the heart of the rainy season and many businesses are closed for the season including our own Oceano Cabinas. Elena is visiting family in Arizona and Kevin is working overseas (no, not in Antarctica this time:) The weather has been cool with a lot of rain (check our weather link!). This will all change in a month or so as the temperatures will get warmer in November and it will start to dry out. The rainforest is at it's most beautiful and vibrant now and during the earlier part of the high season. Many of our resident Gringos choose to travel at this time but will be drifting back home to beautiful Playa Zancudo over the two months. This is a special community of friendly people. The unhurried pace makes it possible to make friends here easily over meals shared in the small restaurants that are found here. There are no chain restaurants or chain hotels here. It is truly an off-the-beaten path paradise. The addition of El Coquito nightclub provides an exciting addition to the night life here but many of our guests come to enjoy the beautiful beach and the laid back atmosphere. Moon travel guides describes it well...
In a few short weeks Elena will be returning to prepare for the upcoming high season. In the meantime we continue to take reservations and look forward to revisiting with our regular guests and making friends with new ones. We are doing some nice special prices and package deals this year so be sure to check in if you are making vacation plans. We have updated the photo galleries and will be adding more photos in the coming weeks.
